Sheila- I agree and appreciate your sharing. I am also thinking that the same benefit might accrue to cities, states, countries, worlds. If we could teach history in a way that was exciting and not just focused on our civil war, wwI, wwII, etc., in the case of the U.S.., we might have healthier and more stable societies. Howard Zinn has done a great job with this and I am sure there are others. I am 63 and when I was in school, the history was largely boring and not useful in terms of helping me see my connection to the larger world.

Thank you for this reflection on truth and perspective. I'll be sharing it with my social work colleagues and students. So important to remember that our stories change as we learn to live with them and the lessons we take from the experiences. So important to remember there are more than one perspective and story from shared experiences.

One of my favorite books of all time, "The Things They Carried" by Tim O'Brien, has as one of its core themes the distinction between "fact" and "truth".

“A thing may happen and be a total lie; another thing may not happen and be truer than the truth.”
― Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried

“And sometimes remembering will lead to a story, which makes it forever. That's what stories are for. Stories are for joining the past to the future. Stories are for those late hours in the night when you can't remember how you got from where you were to where you are. Stories are for eternity, when memory is erased, when there is nothing to remember except the story.”
― Tim O'Brien, The Things They Carried

If you've never read this remarkable book, I encourage you to seek it out.
